Schedule an Appointment with a Registered Practitioner

Once evaluated and approved, your doctor will enter your certification with the state and send you your registration. Then, you can begin purchasing medical marijuana. You may also have a designated caregiver who can buy and cultivate.

Create an Online Account

If your doctor has approved medical marijuana to treat your symptoms, it’s time to move forward with the application process. The first step is to create an online account with a registered practitioner.

Your RP will discuss your medical history with you, determine if your condition qualifies for certification, and evaluate whether you would benefit from the use of cannabis to ease your symptoms. If all goes well, your RP will approve your participation in the medical marijuana program.

After approval, your RP will provide an Authorizing Health Care Practitioner Statement and Registry ID number. You can then track the status of your application, verify your allotment and authorization period, and pay for your card online.

You can also designate a caregiver to purchase and cultivate cannabis on your behalf. Caregivers must be 21 years or older, register with the state, and have a barcoded registry ID, an approval letter from their patient, and a government-issued photo ID to purchase medical marijuana at a dispensary. They can also administer medical cannabis-infused products to patients in public schools as long as they have a valid registry ID and the patient’s approval letter.

Submit Your Application

Once the certifying healthcare professional has completed your appointment and approved you for the medical marijuana program, you’ll receive an email with the next steps. Depending on your state, this may include instructions for visiting a dispensary or receiving your permanent ID card.

Most states have a list of conditions that qualify for a medicinal cannabis card. These may be physical, such as cancer or epilepsy, or mental, such as anxiety and PTSD. You’ll return to the application screen after your payment has been successfully processed. A temporary card will then be emailed to you, while the physical permanent ID will arrive within a few weeks.

Receive Your Certification

After discussing your medical condition with your practitioner, they will complete a patient certification and upload it to the portal for approval. You will receive a medical marijuana card upon approval, which can be used to buy cannabis from a dispensary.

Depending on your state, you may also be required to pay an application and renewal fees. The exact amount depends on your state’s regulations but will usually be a nominal cost.

As a part of the application process, you will likely need to provide a photo of yourself and your caregiver to verify your identity for dispensary purchases. While this requirement varies by state, most states require that the patient or caregiver be 18 or older to receive a card.
