Extend your WiFi to the backyard.

Watch an action-packed movie in the comfort of your backyard, or spend a Midsummer’s Eve with your girlfriends for the perfect evening. You want to use smart IoT devices to DIY your garden and vegetable patch and create the ideal home office where you can work remotely and occasionally even in your yard. To do this, you need to amplify the weak WiFi signal.

Choosing the Right WiFi Signal Extender

A common method is to directly extend the WiFi signal using a WiFi signal amplifier or repeater. By placing a WiFi signal amplifier or repeater indoors, the WiFi signal range can be effectively increased and the WiFi signal enhanced. Consider the following two types of WiFi signal extenders:

1.  Relay network:

A typical repeater network (also known as a ” WiFi extender ” or “WiFi repeater”) can be placed outdoors to amplify WiFi signals in a repeating manner. A relay network refers to a network system consisting of one or more relays for relaying information from source nodes to destination nodes. In a relay network, data travels through a series of intermediate relays until it reaches its destination, thus extending coverage. The repeater is responsible for receiving information and rebroadcasting it through another channel, playing the role of signal enhancement and network-wide transmission.

Relay networks are often used in applications such as wireless sensor networks, Internet of Things, full coverage of smart homes, and monitoring of large factory workshops.


2. Mesh network:

Another way to extend your WiFi signal and improve its quality is to use a mesh network. Unlike WiFi extenders, mesh networks consist of multiple devices, each of which acts as a node for the WiFi signal. Mesh nodes are distributed in different rooms and integrated together to provide full WiFi coverage.

2.  Access point network:

In a more reliable network with wider coverage, you can also choose an access point network. The access point network includes a central AC controller and several wireless signal transmitters that do not provide SSID themselves, and the central AC controller is responsible for distribution. IP address and authentication password. This is similar to a mesh network, where a network of access points connects to a central air conditioning controller via Ethernet cables, while MESH uses a wireless connection. Each MESH node can act as an AC controller, making it a distributed network system.

1.  Determine the location of the router

2.  Place the WiFi signal extender

The WiFi signal extender should be exposed  as much as possiblein the center of the initial WiFi signal and the affected area.

3.  Connect the power supply and initialize the WiFi signal extender

The WiFi signal booster needs to be connected to a power source to establish a connection with the original WiFi network. Once set up, it amplifies the WiFi signal and pushes it outward for better coverage.

Determine current signal coverage

Before taking any steps to prolong your WiFi signal, you need to know your current WiFi signal strength and coverage. This can be done simply by turning on WiFi on the mobile device. When your phone or laptop’s wireless adapter detects available WiFi networks, it displays a list of available network connections and indicates the signal strength of each network. Follow the prompts below to start WiFi setup using your selected device’s wireless adapter:

1.  Turn on WiFi on your Windows 10 computer: Go to the Action Center on the taskbar and select the WiFi button.

2.  Turn on Wi-Fi on MacOS: Click the wireless icon in the menu bar, and select “Turn on Wi-Fi” in the drop-down menu.

3.  Open the preferred settings on iOS: Go to “Settings” -> “Wi-Fi” and enable WiFi connection.

4.  Wi-Fi settings on Android device: Go to Settings -> Wireless & Networks and enable WiFi connection.

Take other optimizations

In addition to using a WiFi signal extender or mesh network, there are other optimizations you can take to strengthen your WiFi signal.

1.  Install updated router software

Make sure your router has the latest version of software or firmware to ensure it keeps up with the latest technology trends.

2.  Close to the router

Working as close to the router area as possible can reduce the chance of WiFi signal loss. If you have work areas indoors, on different floors, or in a courtyard, consider adding a second router or mesh node.

3.  Avoid sources of interference

If your WiFi signal needs to go around many objects or pass through solid walls, consider using physical barriers and avoiding sources of interference such as microwaves.

4.  Consider channel constraints

WiFi signals typically operate in the 2.4GHz or 5GHz frequency range. If you can’t connect, try selecting a different WiFi band or channel.
